The founding of the Craft Theatre has been given an impetus by the need to create a purposeful theatre characterized by the belief in the truthfulness of the events presented on the stage.

In our view, the foremost implication of a theatre is communication.

Although the approaches and techniques we use in our explorations differ formally (and those encompass the the principles of ODIN theatre, classical acting exercises, shamanism in theatre, Buto and contemporary dance), we consider the task of an actor-performer to be to address the viewer directly with his/her energetic potential. This goal brings closer together seemingly disparate forms, striving in this way towards a new theatrical codification, in an attempt to enrich the language of communication, both with a partner and with an audience. In this sense our work is experimental in its exploration of forms but also in their deconstruction, which is driven by the search for the essence.

Our work primarily relies on a personal experience of a (wo)man-actor and the application of that experience on the scene. Above all, it is the attempt to find out and awaken individual potential. When a work is given such a grounding, a personal standpoint and experience of an actor can be transmitted through the exploration of theatrical forms as an instrument into which a personal experience is "poured". This kind of experimental work presents the opportunity to explore our own potential as well as the existing theatrical forms of expression and codification.

As basic concepts of the anthropological theatre are crucial for our work, we are conducting different workshops with both professionals and non-professionals, such as children, the underuchieving or groups with special needs which is of equal importance to us.

The backbone of the CRAFT THEATRE make Dragana Alfirevic, Dejan Garbos, Rodrigo S. de Carvalho and Vedran Vucic.

Former participants of the Youth Programme of the Fund for an Open Society, Dragana Alfirevic and Dejan Garbos used to attend a number of workshops and seminars, and cooperated with artists from the country and abroad (Ister Teatar, Living Teatar, Dah Teatar, Silesian Dance Theater, Open Teatre).

Working with the OMEN theatre group, the two have realized various projects, performances and short pieces Nistar the Rover, Generative space, ERG V.I.R.U.S., Tiny Nameless Play, Arrival, City) which had been performed at various international theatre festivals (BELEF,. BITEF, FIAT). They have also been involved in humanitarian work realized through numerous workshops.

In the course of the realization of the Znak project (Silesian Dance Theatre, Bytom, Poland), the two met a Brazilian dancer and choreographer, Rodrigo S. de Carvalho. As the artistic sensibilities came to be mutually recognized, they decided they wished for the cooperation to continue. The idea came to be effected in July 1998 with the Quartet project. The project consisted of the seminar of contemporary dance and the solo performance Tres Momentos (conducted and given by de Calvalho) and the premiere of the Quartet performance, the authors and perfomers of which are D. Alfirevic and D. Garbos, also the initiators of the project. The project marks the founding of the CRAFT THEATRE.

The years of work brought Rodrigo S. de Calvalho the experience of working and cooperating with world-famous choreographers and pedagogues. Three years he spent studying at the Cuban National Ballet School, two years he did further schooling in Paris, while also working on the exploration of various techniques in New York. Was a member of Actors and Dancers Association of Rio de Janeiro, Chan and Dancers (NY) and a member of the Silesian Dance Theatre (Poland). Realized his own choreographies (Black & White, Solo, Tres Momentos) and danced a number of others (Oscillations, Moderato Cantabile, Angel Island…). His work on the Quartet project and performance made him one of the founders of the CRAFT THEATRE.
Vedran Vucic, a composer, approaches music through the use of artificial life and intelligence and is mainly engaged in the development of the methodology of synthesis, analysis and processing of sound. His music is mostly following the lived transformations of the characters and their relationships rather than literally describing events on the stage. He is the project director of the Electronic Music Foundation (NY) for Eastern Europe, maintains cooperation with various institutions in the country and abroad; he composed music for the following performances: Nistar the Rover, Generative Space, Tiny Nameless Play, Quartet.

The Quartet performance is run regularly at Cinema REX, European House of Arts and Culture, where CRAFT THEATRE seminars and workshops are also taking place. Currently, we are working on the realization of the Building the Fall project. The project will consist of experimental work with young professionals in workshops and of the Fall perfomance. It purports to probe relations between an individual and a system.
